– Had to send my unit back to Amazon with much aggravation (hey it’s not like you can drop this at the Post Office with a pre-printed label, right? Fortunately Amazon’s crazy good customer service saved the day!). Not sure if it was defective or what, but it *barely* cooled a small room to bring it down one or two degree Celsius after hours of working (I followed all the installation instructions on Whynter website and YouTube). Reasonably quiet, sure, but I would have liked those 14K BTU to have more oomph. Ended up buying a 12K BTU Frigidaire unit from a local specialized store, and professionally installed by them in the window (exactly what I was trying to avoid, so very disappointing); however those 12K BTU now bring the room to a chilling cold after a couple hours! I truly do not understand ; why are these portable units so inefficient?

– After reading all the reviews on Amazon, and seeing them being used in YouTube videos, I decided to buy this air conditioner for my small apartment in Mississauga Ontario. It has not lived up to any of the hype. It’s not super loud, but it’s not quiet either. It blows cold air only lightly, enough that it never did genuinely cool my small living space. I was very frustrated by this air conditioner, as I thought I was getting a top-of-the-line product. Instead, I got something that’s super expensive, large, heavy and barely works as promised. It was so awkward to take delivery and get it up into my apartment that I never even bothered to try and return it. It also made a significant impact on my electric bill, although that is to be expected. I would never spend the money they want for this unit again.

– Whynter’s customer support division is dysfunctional. Right from the first set-up, my ARC-14S wouldn’t turn on, reading “E1” on the LCD display. My unit is still covered under the 1 year warranty so I contacted the manufacturer by phone. Two days later, a customer service agent replied to my initial call and explained that she was going to email me a set of instructions she wanted me to follow in order to ‘troubleshoot’ the issue myself. The instructions required me to take the unit apart and investigate for internal damage or a faulty fuse. Taking the unit apart is no easy task and I was unable to do even this first step. I have called and sent several emails since, but Whynter has not replied to single one. I understand that summer is their busy season and there may be some delay in responding to customer support inquiries. However, their unresponsiveness is extremely negligent! It took me a while to save up for this unit, and I can’t afford to simply go out and buy a new one.
